The native app trap vs. the frictionless future

We explicitly chose not to build a native iOS or Android app. Here is the data explaining why your guests will thank you for that choice.

What is a progressive web app (PWA)?

A progressive web app is a website that behaves like an app. A guest opens it from a link and can add it to their home screen, where it launches full screen, with no browser bar, no App Store and no download. It updates itself, and once it has loaded it keeps working offline.

It is a mature, widely-used pattern - for a guest on a three-night stay it is the whole point: all the convenience of an app, with none of the friction of installing one. Google's web.dev and MDN have the technical detail.

Why 85% of hotel guests ignore native apps

Many independent hotels spend tens of thousands of dollars launching a proprietary mobile app, only to watch engagement tank. Forcing a guest to open an App Store, enter a password, sit through an install and verify an email - just for a three-night stay - creates catastrophic drop-offs.

The 15% adoption ceiling. Industry research across thousands of independent properties shows native hotel app adoption stubbornly hovers between 10% and 20%. That means up to 90% of your arrivals are cut off from your digital guest channels, reverting right back to overwhelming your front desk.

The mobile preference reality. This low adoption is not because guests hate technology. Over 70% of travelers actively prefer using their mobile devices to navigate their stay. The demand for digital exists - the delivery mechanism is what is broken.

Zero download, instant utility

Our digital directories bypass the App Store entirely. Guests simply point their phone camera at a beautifully styled, in-room QR anchor point. Within half a second, a full-screen, branded interface boots on their phone - no downloads, no passwords, no registration friction.

Permanent consumer conditioning. QR codes are no longer pandemic-era novelties - they have become a permanent global data layer. The global commerce standards network is rolling out GS1 Sunrise 2027, replacing traditional 1D barcodes with 2D QR interfaces across checkout and tracking lines worldwide. Your international guests are already trained to use their phone camera as their primary tool for interacting with the physical world.

The takeaway

By meeting your guests inside the smartphone behaviours they already use every day, we deliver an immediate 4x jump in digital engagement compared to traditional native hotel apps.
